Reef Dram Sandals

I’d seen the Reef Dram Sandals a month or so ago on Gizmodo, but was recently reminded of the footwear meant for thirsty beach-goers after seeing a video of them on the news. I’m still not sure how much of a gimmick this is supposed to be versus an actual working “foot flask”. The idea is a standard comfy and contoured EVA sandal with a encapsulated “canteen” built into the heel.
I think Reef claims that the primary intention of the sandals isn’t to elicitly hide alcoholic beverages. But come on, of COURSE that’s what people are going to try to store in them. It holds 3 ounces - that doesn’t seem like very useful storage for a gulp of Pepsi. On the news video I saw, they interviewed several people walking on the street and asked them if they thought people would actually use it for something other than shots of their favorite liquor. Most laughed and said, “What do you think?”
Access to the good stuff in your foot is through a protected screwtop cap on the side of the sandal that only opens with an included “church/fin key”. My main concern is not the stares I’ll get when attempting to bring my foot up near my mouth (I’ll say it’s a new yoga pose), but the sanitary concerns from what’s on or near the bottom of your sandal. But I guess this is a great gift for the shoe fanatic/drinker who says that they have everything.

You’re very right about anybody wanting to drink out of these when in public. (”Uh,excuse me,I need a drink of my shoe.”) I don’t think these will sell very well. Except maybe to underage drinkers and people that really likes to drink.

Pat, FYI, the opening for the flask is on the side of the sole, not the bottom where you are in contact iwth the ground or the top in contact iwth your foot. Furthermore, it is recessed and has a screw cap that totally covers the neck of the bottle and seals it liquid tight.
Would you have a problem drinking out of a coke bottle that you dropped on the ground as long as it didn’t explode and you then poured the contents in a glass?
Other folks have said they think it will rupture under the weight of the wearer. Well, the flask is rigid, not pliable, almost seems like lexan. I would be impressed if you could break it with just the weight of your body and gravity. Maybe if you jumped off a cliff, but then your shoes arent going to be your bigest concern

While I love these, if nothing else for the gimmicky novelty factor, I’ve had nothing but problems.
I’m not a heavy guy at 5′10 160 pounds, but I’ve broken two pairs now. My first pair lasted maybe a month, and the store swapped them out. It’s been at least 6 months or so and they’re broken again. They feel fine to wear, but the “flask” is cracked on both sandals.
